The air cleaner removes microscopic dirt and dust particles from the air before it is mixed with fuel. This prevents abrasive wear to engine parts. Engines require about 10,000 gallons clean air for every gallon of gasoline burned, so a properly operating air cleaner is critical to engine performance.
